Lidl Ireland has announced a €30 million expansion of its supply contract with West Cork-based Keohane Seafoods, enhancing fresh and frozen seafood offerings across 184 stores and exporting to European markets. This growth boosts employment and highlights Lidl's commitment to local partnerships and sustainability.

Lidl Ireland has announced a substantial expansion of its supply contract with Keohane Seafoods, a West Cork-based company, valued at over €30 million. This deal aims to enhance the supply of fresh, frozen, and a new range of ready-to-eat seafood products across Lidl’s 184 stores throughout Ireland. Moreover, these products will also be exported to Lidl outlets across several European countries, including Germany, France, Switzerland, and the Canary Islands.

Keohane Seafoods was established in 2010 by Michael Keohane, alongside his sons Colman and Brian, who originate from the coastal areas of West Cork. The company first began supplying to Lidl Ireland in 2011 with a modest offering of two salmon darnes, as well as cod and mackerel products. Over the past 14 years, their partnership has flourished, leading to Lidl awarding Keohane Seafoods a significant contract worth €20 million in 2022.

The growth of the collaboration has had a positive impact on employment, with Keohane Seafoods now employing 235 individuals across its operations, which include 200 staff members in Bantry and 85 in Cork. The company has invested significantly in sustainability and innovation, opening a new “Ready to Eat” facility in Bantry last year, facilitating the rollout of new product lines tailored for Lidl shoppers.

Colman Keohane, managing director of Keohane Seafoods, commented on the partnership, saying, “Our partnership with Lidl has been one of the main ingredients to our success. Lidl has been an essential partner for our growth and their continued belief in investment has given us the unique opportunity to showcase our products to Lidl customers both locally and internationally.” He further emphasised the commitment to quality and sustainability, stating, “With Lidl’s ongoing support, we have been able to innovate, introduce new products and adapt our operations all while minimising our environmental impact.”

Emma Nolan, senior buyer at Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland, expressed similar sentiments, highlighting Lidl's dedication to providing high-quality products at affordable prices. She noted, “This new partnership with Keohane Seafoods underscores the exceptional quality and success of their offerings, both here and abroad. Their unwavering commitment to product development, innovation and sustainability perfectly aligns with our own business ethos.”

In its latest Supplier and Business Partner Impact Report, Lidl Ireland indicated a strong procurement performance, reporting over €1.67 billion spent on goods and services from Irish businesses in 2024, an increase of €41 million from the previous year. Of that amount, €1.2 billion was directed towards the Irish agrifood sector, reflecting an increase of €89 million compared to 2023. This expansion in procurement underscores Lidl's ongoing commitment to strengthening its partnerships with local suppliers.
