Tesco is one of the biggest private sector employers in Ireland employing over 13,000 colleagues across the country. Tesco contributes €3.2billion to the Irish economy every year. Supporting local suppliers is very much part of the business ethos of Tesco Ireland; we source from over 480 Irish food and drink suppliers and support 13,000 Irish farm families. All of the fresh beef, pork, lamb, eggs and milk that Tesco Ireland sells are 100% Irish.
Tesco is proud to support the communities in which we serve. In July 2014, we launched the Tesco Community Fund. Through this we donate €100,000 every eight weeks to local projects in the communities around each of our 149 stores.
We are committed to ensuring that no food that is safe for human consumption will be wasted at Tesco. That’s why in July 2014, Tesco was the first retailer in Ireland to partner with FoodCloud, to manage food surplus in our business.
To date we have supported donations of surplus food to over 260 charitable organisations supported. Over 40,000 meals are now donated every week from our stores nationwide, totally over 4,000,000 meals in just three short years; resulting in €5.6 million in savings to the charitable sector. This year, we’ve set an ambitious target that no food that is suitable for human consumption will go to waste in our stores in Ireland by 2020.
