Openfolde marks 200 years with global growth and climate-smart seed innovation
Openfolde, a sixth-generation family business, celebrates its bicentenary with a global event, launching Climate Smart seeds and relocating its headquarters to Belfast, underlining a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and international growth in agriculture.
Openfolde, the Belfast-based sixth-generation family enterprise and parent company of grass and forage seed specialist Germinal, is celebrating a landmark 200 years since its founding. The company marked the bicentenary with a special event at the Titanic Hotel in Belfast, bringing together employees from around the world to recognise the people who have driven its enduring success. Established in 1825 by Samuel McCausland as a general merchant business trading through Belfast Port, Openfolde has since transformed into a pioneering international group focused on innovative forage seed technologies and environmental solutions for agriculture, amenity, and domestic markets across Northern Ireland, Ireland, Great Britain, and beyond.
The company, which rebranded as Openfolde in 2023 to unify its expanding business portfolio under a forward-looking identity, honours nearly two centuries of continuous leadership by McCausland’s direct descendants. William Gilbert, managing director of Openfolde and chairman of Germinal, emphasised the deep legacy and resilience that have shaped the business. Speaking at the celebration, he highlighted the core values of innovation, collaboration, and long-term thinking as pivotal to sustaining the company over two centuries while driving it towards a sustainable future.
Germinal remains the largest and most central entity within the Openfolde Group. It adopts a science-led approach to developing new grass and forage seed varieties designed to meet the dual challenges of environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity. This commitment is supported by Germinal Horizon, the group’s research and development division headquartered at Aberystwyth University’s Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS). Complementing these efforts are field trials conducted at research centres in Wiltshire, England, and New Zealand, underpinning Germinal’s reputation as a global innovator in the seed industry.
In 2025, Germinal marked its anniversary year with a breakthrough launch of its Climate Smart product range, which includes five new seed products—CLEAN, THRIVE, ADAPT, CAPTURE, and RESTORE. These products offer science-based, practical solutions aimed at reducing agricultural emissions, enhancing biodiversity, and securing farm profitability. This move signals Openfolde’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and helping farmers adapt to climate-resilient agriculture, reinforcing the company’s leadership in supporting the evolving needs of modern farming.
Openfolde’s recent strategic decisions further reveal its dedication to growth and local roots. In a significant move, the company relocated its global head office back to Belfast after 50 years, signalling confidence in Northern Ireland’s role as a base for future expansion. Alongside Germinal UK & Ireland, Germinal Horizon, and the ecommerce brands The Grass People and Lawnsmith.com, Openfolde also holds a 50% stake in New Zealand-based grain and seed business Cates, underscoring its global reach.
John Gilbert, chairman of the Openfolde Group and the fifth generation of family leadership, reflected on the company’s journey from a Belfast merchant business to a global innovator. He pointed to the company’s enduring focus on “practical, science-led progress” and its mission to support farmers and land managers not just for today but for generations to come. The celebration of 200 years, he said, offered an opportunity to honour the people and values that have stood the test of time.
Looking ahead, Openfolde plans a series of milestone events throughout the anniversary year to engage partners and stakeholders, including a reception in Edinburgh and a Chairman’s dinner at the historic Malmaison Hotel—the very site where the company was first established. These commemorations reflect the blend of heritage and innovation that continues to define Openfolde’s role in agriculture and seed technology.
Openfolde’s evolution from a 19th-century Belfast merchant company into a leader in the global seed industry encapsulates a story of resilience, innovation, and family commitment. With a strong foothold in scientific research, a growing international presence, and a focus on climate-aware farming solutions, the company exemplifies how heritage businesses can successfully navigate modern challenges while remaining true to their origins.
