Bord Bia highlights new digital tool to boost sustainable farming at Tullamore Show
Bord Bia is promoting collaboration and innovative digital solutions, like the AgNav platform, to enhance environmental sustainability and market resilience for Irish farmers at this year's Tullamore Show.
Bord Bia is urging visitors to this year's Tullamore Show to stop by the Sustainable Livestock Village, where farmers can hear how environmental progress can also support market returns and long-term farm resilience. The stand will be part of the wider show on Saturday, 9 August, which Bord Bia says remains one of the country’s most significant agricultural gatherings, drawing large crowds and a wide range of livestock, trade and produce exhibitors.
The village, now in its fourth year, is designed as a practical advice hub rather than a display piece. According to the Tullamore Show organisers, it brings together bodies including the Department of Agriculture, Teagasc, Bord Bia, the ICBF, Animal Health Ireland, Meat Industry Ireland and Dairy Industry Ireland, with the aim of giving farmers clear guidance they can apply on their own holdings. J
oe Burke, Bord Bia’s senior manager for meat and livestock, said the central message this year is collaboration. Speaking ahead of the show, he said farmers do not have to approach sustainability on their own and pointed to the range of research, advice and support already available. Bord Bia said its staff will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions on Quality Assurance, sustainability and export opportunities, underlining the link it sees between farm practice and Ireland’s standing in overseas markets.
A key draw at the village will be AgNav, the free digital sustainability platform developed by Teagasc, Bord Bia and the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation. Teagasc says the tool combines data, advisory support and decision-making guidance in one place, allowing farmers to assess carbon emissions, benchmark performance and identify improvements. The Department of Agriculture has also backed the platform’s development, allocating €2 million to expand it as part of Ireland’s climate action efforts.
Beyond livestock, Bord Bia is again backing two familiar competitions at the show: the All-Ireland Quality Potato Championship and the Bord Bia 7-a-Day Best in Season Fruit and Veg Basket Competition. The company says both events recognise the work of growers and remain popular fixtures at an exhibition that Bord Bia says attracts about 60,000 visitors in a typical year.
