Irish supermarkets adopt Sunday schedules for June bank holiday, urging shoppers to check opening hours
Major Irish supermarket chains will operate on Sunday hours on June 1, with shoppers advised to verify store timings before travelling due to altered schedules during the bank holiday weekend.
Shoppers across Ireland are being reminded to check before they travel this June bank holiday weekend, as the country’s biggest supermarket chains are set to keep trading but with altered hours on Monday, June 1. The changes are expected to be most noticeable on the bank holiday itself, when many branches will follow Sunday-style schedules rather than their normal weekday routines.
According to the Irish Mirror, Dunnes Stores, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, SuperValu and Marks and Spencer are all among the retailers adjusting their timetables for the holiday. The practical effect for customers will vary by branch, but the broad pattern is the same: earlier closing times in many cases, and occasionally later starts, depending on location and store format.
Dunnes Stores is expected to run largely on Sunday hours on Monday, with many branches trading from around 9am to 8pm, although opening times differ markedly from store to store. Tesco is also expected to use Sunday schedules in most locations, with some branches closing at 6pm or 8pm and larger stores possibly remaining open until 10pm, according to the Irish Mirror and Dublin City FM.
Lidl and Aldi are both set to trade on Sunday hours as well. Dublin City FM and Extra.ie have reported that many Lidl stores will close at 9pm, while Aldi outlets are expected to open from 9am to 9pm in most locations, though local variation remains possible. SuperValu and Marks and Spencer are also due to keep their doors open, but with bank holiday schedules that generally mean earlier closing times than usual.
Retailers have repeatedly urged customers to use online store locators before setting off, a precaution that is especially important on bank holidays when opening hours can differ not just between chains but between neighbouring branches. Normal trading patterns are expected to resume on Tuesday, June 2.
