Tesco Ireland has begun construction of a new store in Cavan Town, setting in motion a project the retailer says will bring a modern shopping offer, support local employment and deepen its links with suppliers in the region. The development follows a sod-turning event last month and comes as the company continues to invest in its Irish estate.

The new 35,000 square foot outlet is being built by the Elliot Group, a Cavan-based contractor, and Tesco has presented the scheme as a multi-million euro commitment to the town. During the build, the project is expected to support jobs in construction, while the finished store will add permanent roles when it opens in 2027. The existing Tesco in Cavan, which currently employs about 60 people, will remain open throughout the works.

Tesco says the store will broaden its offer with Irish and international food and drink, F&F clothing and a Tesco Mobile outlet. It will also continue to stock local names including Barry John’s sausages, Cully’s bread and Drummully Boxty, alongside Tesco Finest pizzas made by Crust & Crumb. The company has also said grocery home shopping will be available from the new site.

Sustainability features are central to the design. Tesco plans to install fridge doors, energy-efficient lighting and EV charging points in the car park, as well as provide ample parking. Construction Awards reported that the project also includes Click+Collect and a grocery home shopping hub, while planning documents cited by Building Info point to a wider development package that had already won approval from An Bord Pleanála.

Arlene Maguire, Tesco Ireland’s property director, said at the sod-turning that the company was pleased to get started on what she described as a long-awaited store for Cavan Town. She said the retailer wanted to offer shoppers more choice while backing local jobs and suppliers, and praised working with a local contractor. Elliot Group chief executive Darragh Elliot said the scheme would support employment and contribute to the wider community, adding that delivering the project in its home town was especially meaningful.
